The Core Structure of a Tongits Round

A standard Tongits hand starts with the dealer getting 13 cards and each of the two other players getting 12. The dealer draws first, then play moves clockwise — draw one card, decide what to meld or discard, then end your turn. The goal is to reduce the total point value of unmelded cards in your hand. Sets (three or four of

the same rank) and runs (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit) can be laid down as melds. When your hand is empty, you call Tongits and win outright. If no one empties their hand, the player with the lowest point count when the draw pile runs out wins the pot. Knowing when to dump high-value cards early is the

first real skill this game teaches.

Key Tongits Terms You Should Know

What is a meld in Tongits?

A meld is a valid group of cards you lay face-up on the table — either a set of three or four matching ranks, or a run of three or more consecutive suited cards.

What does calling Tongits mean?

Calling Tongits means you have emptied your entire hand through melds and discards. It is an immediate win, and the other players count their remaining unmelded card points as their loss.

What is a fight or challenge in Tongits?

A fight happens when another player challenges your Tongits call. Both hands are compared by total unmelded point value; the lower count wins, stopping an unchallenged instant win.

What are deadwood points?

Deadwood refers to the unmelded cards still in your hand at the end of a round. Their face values are summed to determine your score; the lowest deadwood total wins the hand.

What is a burn card in Tongits?

A burn card is the first card removed from the deck before dealing begins. It is set aside and does not enter play, keeping the deal sequence unpredictable from the start.

What does nakaw mean in a Tongits context?

Nakaw is a special win condition where you steal a card discarded by another player to complete your meld immediately, rather than drawing from the central pile on your turn.

Common Questions About Starting Tongits

The dealer receives 13 cards. Both other players receive 12 each. The dealer also takes the first draw of the game, which is why the dealing position carries a slight early advantage in hand-building.

Yes. Tongits tables load directly in your mobile browser after you log in to your account — no separate download needed. Players in Baguio and elsewhere access the same table lobby through the browser without switching apps.

Lay down melds as early as you form them — holding completed sets in your hand only keeps deadwood risk on the table. High-value face cards that do not fit a run or set should be discarded quickly to lower your exposure.

When the draw pile is exhausted, every player reveals their remaining hand. The player carrying the lowest total unmelded point value wins the round. This is why managing deadwood early matters throughout the game.

Nakaw follows the standard Tongits rule set we apply across all tables. If a discarded card completes a valid meld in your hand, you can claim it on your turn instead of drawing from the pile.

Each player contributes an equal stake at the start of the round. The winning player — by Tongits call or lowest deadwood when the draw pile empties — collects the pot. The amount posts directly to your account wallet.
